State Cancer Councils

The Florida Cancer Control and Research Advisory Council:

  • Established in 1979
  • Made up of four committees, each devoted to achieving a particular goal
  • Advises the Florida Legislature, Governor, and Surgeon General on reducing the cancer burden
  • Tracks state cancer trends and disparities
  • Promotes awareness of and access to cancer prevention, screenings, and treatments
  • Creates position papers for state legislation and policy pertaining to cancer issues

The Florida Cancer Plan Council: 

  • Established in 2004
  • Consists of chairpersons from each of the Regional Cancer Control Collaboratives and representatives from the American Cancer Society, the American College of Surgeons, the Florida Cancer Data System, various health-related organizations, cancer hospitals, universities, and cancer survivors
  • Works with the Florida Cancer Control and Research Advisory Council to coordinate statewide efforts to reduce the cancer burden
  • Supports the Regional Cancer Control Collaboratives
  • Directs the efforts of the Florida Cancer Plan and ensures accountability 

The Florida Biomedical Research Advisory Council: 

  • Consists of 11 members (four are appointed by the Governor)
  • Advises the Florida Surgeon General on the James and Esther King Biomedical Research Program and the Bankhead-Coley Cancer Research Program
  • Develops strategies for these programs
  • Makes recommendations about which research proposals to fund

The Regional Cancer Control Collaboratives: 

  • Includes six regional groups: Northwest, North Central, Northeast, East Central, Southwest, and Southeast
  • Made up of interested parties who implement Florida Cancer Plan strategies in their respective counties

The South East American Indian Council: 

  • Established in 2011
  • Educates members of non-Federally recognized American Indian tribes, clans, and bands about cancer prevention
