Cancer Prevention

When it comes to preventing cancer, there are no guarantees, but everyone can take steps to reduce their risk.

Making smart lifestyle choices (like exercising often, eating healthy foods, not smoking, limiting how much alcohol you drink, and protecting yourself from too much exposure to UV radiation) helps a lot. So does having good genes, but there’s not much you can do about that.

Talk to your doctor about your medical history, your close relatives’ medical history, and your lifestyle. This helps you understand your personal risk factors, including which cancers you might need to watch out for a little more carefully, and what you can do to reduce your risk.

It also helps your doctor make recommendations about which cancer screenings you should get, when you should start getting them, and how often you should get them. Screening tests are available for many types of cancer, and they’re essential to early detection.

Catching pre-cancer and cancer in early stages is the most important factor in treatment success.
